Japanese Foreign Ministry Visiting Fellowship for Dr Declan Downey
Dr Declan M. Downey has been awarded the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Visiting Fellowship with engagements at Keio University, the University of Tokyo, and the University of Kyoto. He is conducting research in Japan this March and he has been granted privileged access to the archives of the former Prime Minister, Yoshida Shigeru (1946-7 and 1948-54). In December 2019 Dr Downey was awarded the Japanese Foreign Minister's COmmendation to mark the 25th anniversary of his teaching of Japanese history at UCD and his promotion of Japanese Studies and relations between Japan and Ireland.
